Grain Operations Manager

Department: Grain Operations

Reports to: CEO

Job Summary
The Grain Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing daily grain facility operations to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable performance. This includes managing staff, maintaining equipment and facilities, handling grain inventory and quality, and ensuring compliance with company policies and safety standards. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, effective communication, and a commitment to operational excellence and customer service.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee the daily operations of the grain department in accordance with company policies
  • Lead, train, and supervise grain operations staff at assigned location(s)
  • Maintain and promote a safe work environment, including conducting safety meetings and ensuring compliance with OSHA and company safety procedures
  • Ensure facilities, equipment, and grounds are clean, organized, and maintained to standard
  • Perform and oversee scheduled and preventative maintenance of elevators, conveyors, vehicles, and other grain-handling equipment
  • Conduct pre-harvest inspections
  • Monitor and manage grain quality, inventory, and bin conditions
  • Ensure accurate and timely grain temperature readings and reporting
  • Oversee grain shipping and receiving processes, ensuring proper documentation and minimal discounts
  • Submit required location reports, including maintenance logs, housekeeping checklists, and monthly inspections
  • Respond promptly to customer questions, concerns, and complaints
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal safety, environmental, and workplace regulations
  • Submit millwright work requests for facility repairs or new construction projects; solicit and evaluate multiple bids to ensure cost-effective and efficient solutions for the grain department and overall company operations
  • Review and approve repair and maintenance invoices, ensuring work was completed to standard and aligns with budget expectations
  • Lead the implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, and profitability; communicate and coordinate execution of these initiatives with branch managers across locations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; post-secondary education in agriculture or related field preferred
  • 1–2 years of grain operations or similar industry experience; supervisory experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, reporting software)
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently, and occasionally over 100 lbs
  • Ability to climb ladders, operate heavy equipment, and work at heights
  • Ability to work in environments with grain dust, noise, and variable temperatures
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends during peak seasons

Originator

About the Role

The Originator role is a buyer position that is responsible for purchasing commodities from producer customers and maintaining and enhancing grower relationships. This role works with a provided grower list to maintain business and relationships. Originators contribute to the daily operations and provide administrative support for the department to maximize efficiencies that will directly contribute to the profitability of Scoular by working collaboratively with the purchasing team. This role will partner closely with the logistics team, accounting team, merchandisers and facility/plant staff.

  • Develop skills to make grain buying decisions.
  • Learn and understand local producer trends and assist in communicating this information as required.
  • Execution of purchase contracts with accurate documentation and ensure contract compliance.
  • Participate in industry relevant trades shows by arranging a booth when applicable, working the Trade Shows and Grower Meetings as well as other industry functions.
  • Awareness and understanding of marketing alternatives and digital tools used to make purchasing decisions, as well as enhance and manage producer relationships.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with farm producers by providing credible and trustworthy marketing services that contributes to the company’s excellent customer service image in the farming community.
  • Assist team in building new relationships with new producers.
  • Interact with customers, express ideas, and share opinions with Scoular team on customer trends and opinions from marketing ideas to planting and crop conditions.
  • Provide customers with accurate market information and answers to questions about their business transactions.
  • Contract management including reconciling balances with customers.
About You
  • College degree in business related field or equivalent experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and relationship building capability.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly skilled in problem solving techniques.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to travel, as needed.

Preferred

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, along with desire to learn new programs.
